Khan unveils plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street using new powers

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is once more pressing for Oxford Street to be pedestrianised after previous plans were blocked by Westminster City Council. His hopes for making the street traffic-free in 2018 were dashed after the council withdrew its support stating that residents feared it would divert buses, taxis and delivery vehicles onto their streets.

Labour took over control of the council from the Tories in 2022 but is also opposed to Oxford Street becoming totally traffic-free.
