The backlog of carriageway repairs in England and Wales has risen to almost £17bn while roads are only surfaced, on average, once every 93 years. These are among the figures in this year’s Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey report, commissioned by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA).
More than half (52%) the local road network – equivalent to around 106,000 miles – has less than 15 years’ structural life remaining, according to the report.
