The Government has approved the expansion of Luton airport despite the Planning Inspectorate’s recommendation that Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander reject the proposals due to environmental concerns.

Luton Rising, the airport’s owner, said the decision could bring “significant economic, employment and social benefits for our town”. It forecasts the expansion will result in passenger numbers increasing from 16.7 million up to 32 million passengers a year by 2043.
