The Highways Agency's M42 Active Traffic Management scheme comes into operation next week. Between junctions 3a (the M40) and 7 (the M6) drivers will be able to use the hard shoulder as a running lane to reduce congestion at busy periods. Sixty-three signs have been installed on the 17km section of motorway that advise drivers when the hard shoulder is available and inform them about changing speed limits.
