Are London bus fares really that cheap?

I have to agree with Steven Norris that London bus fares are cheaper at the point of use than most other bus networks in the UK.  However, for the average three-mile journey, the fare-paying passenger using Oyster pay as you go is charged £1.20 (2010 fares). This is 40p per mile which is comparable with the full average cost of travel in a small car for those journeys where there are no parking charges and the Congestion Charge does not apply!
