Lib Dems criticise 'excessive' Department for Transport redundancy pay outs

The Liberal Democrats have criticised redundancy and early retirement payments at the Department for Transport under the previous Labour government.

A recent Freedom of Information request reveals that over the last three years at least 33 staff received more than £200,000 each as a result of redundancy, compulsory retirement or compulsory severance.

In 2007/8 223 people were removed from their positions at the DfT at a cost of over £18.5m. In 2008/9 the departure of 173 people cost...
