The high cost to the taxpayer of Britain’s regional rail network was highlighted this week as the DfT published the interim findings of Sir Roy McNulty’s review of rail value for money.

The review shows that regional railway services outside London and the South East receive a subsidy of 31.1p per passenger mile, compared with 7.3p for long-distance franchises and 4.8p for franchises in London and the South East.
