Councils revive 1960s plan for new motorway across the Peak District

Local authorities on both sides of the Peak District are pressing for the creation of a new motorway standard road to  connect Manchester’s M60/M67 with the M1 in South Yorkshire. The road could make use of the disused Woodhead rail tunnels.

The DfT is considering a request from the councils and two local MPs to fund a major study into creating a second strategic route across the Pennines, reviving an idea touted in the 1960s.
