Free bus travel for seniors is contributing to ‘peak car’

In an otherwise excellent ‘Viewpoint’ article endeavouring to explain why car use has ‘plateaued’, Gordon Stokes asserts that we are not seeing a decline in use of the car by older people (LTT 09 Nov). I disagree. The advent of universal ‘free’ bus passes for seniors means that elderly drivers, when they go into town, leave their car in the garage and take the bus. Some seniors I know have given up driving altogether.
