Lawyers are not universally loved. However, occasionally, we must be thankful for them. This should have been the case recently when it was only the intervention of Sir Richard Branson’s lawyers, and the subsequent investigations by the lawyers hired by the Department for Transport, that brought to light the anomalies that have caused the arcane franchising system foisted on the British public by the 1993 Railways Act to be subject to review.
