I like rail travel. At its best it is a more civilised and inspirational mode of travel than any other except possibly walking in the Dales. I am a fan of Betjeman and think that the loss of the Euston Arch was a wanton piece of destruction. But rail travel is inherently expensive however it is funded, so difficult social choices have to be made.
