A better way to re-connect Bedford and Cambridge by rail

In your feature article about the East West Rail link (LTT 10 Jan) I was surprised there was no mention of the simplest and most direct way of connecting Bedford and Cambridge: follow the original route from Bedford to the south side of Potton, with a slight deviation round the north side of Sandy, then strike east for the Hitchin-Cambridge line at Shepreth.

This would be a mile longer than the original route but would not affect any heavily-trafficked main lines....
