The number of bike hires made in London fell by 1.5 million or 15% last year, according to figures released by Transport for London.

Hires went from 9,519,283 in 2012 to 8,045,459 in 2013.

Transport for London expanded the scheme into more of west and south-west London in December. Despite this, total hires in January 2014 were 12% down on January 2013 – 498,870 compared with 565,589.
