The growth in personal daily travel in developed countries such as the UK has ground to a halt because our demand for travel has saturated, believes David Metz.

When the National Travel Survey began in the early 1970s the average distance travelled per person in the UK was about 4,500 miles a year, he says, but by 1995 it had grown to about 7,000. Since then it has remained broadly stable.
