Liberal Democrat members have overruled their leadership by voting to retain the party’s blanket opposition to airport expansion in the South East.
Party leader Nick Clegg and his senior colleagues wanted the party to change its policy for the manifesto for next year’s General Election. The party conference in Glasgow considered an amendment that would have seen the party continue to oppose Heathrow expansion but permit expansion at Gatwick. But members rejected the change.
