Councils in England spent just over £1bn last year on the statutory concessionary travel scheme for older people and the disabled, data compiled by the Department for Communities and Local Government reveals. 

Total reimbursement paid to bus operators rose to £1.06bn, up from £1.04bn in 2012/13. A further £154.5m was spent on discretionary schemes, up from £153.4m in 2012/13.
