TfL launches cyclist detection technology trial

12 June 2015

Transport for London has launched trials of cyclist detection technologies, which could be used to vary the green signal phase for segregated cycle lanes according to cyclist volumes.

Two types of detection equipment are being trialled. The radar-based system uses two radars embedded in the road surface close to the stop line. The thermal-imaging system detects the heat profile of riders as they approach the detection zone.

Trials of the technologies are taking place on Cable Street on Cycle Superhighway 3, where a segregated cycle lane has already been installed. The trial is testing the technologies’ performance and the systems are not connected to traffic signals.

Three further trials will be held on other sections of the superhighway network to test the technologies with different junction designs.

In a separate development, the DfT has just granted blanket approval to TfL to install low level cycle signals at junctions.

Discuss this at LTT's Cycle City Event on the 25-26 June 2016
