Do daylight running lights really make roads safer?

In response to Morten Welde’s letter on daylight running lights (DRLs) I would note that, as a motorcyclist and cyclist, I hesitate to join him in advocating the compulsory use of such lights on all vehicles (ibid). 

The motorcyclist, a particularly vulnerable user, used to have the advantage of being the only vehicle travelling around in daylight with a light on (with the exception of a few Scandinavian cars), which allowed the motorcycle to stand out in the crowd. Now it is...
