The London Borough of Merton is drawing up plans for a £50 diesel surcharge on residential and business parking permits.
The council hopes the charge will cut diesel vehicle ownership, thereby reducing pollution. “There is now conclusive evidence to show that diesel vehicles produce a disproportionate amount of harmful pollutants that pose a risk to health,” officers told last week’s sustainable communities overview and scrutiny panel meeting.
