Southern access for Newcastle station to unlock development

Newcastle City Council is planning further improvements for pedestrians at Newcastle Central Station in a bid to support development.

The city council said it wants to improve walking links to the station from the south, at the back of the station, with a new public square around the Stephenson Monument and improvements to the Orchard Street tunnel. Cllr Ged Bell, cabinet member for investment and development at Newcastle City Council, said: “Improved walking links to the south would ensure that the Stephenson Quarter and land on Forth Yards can be developed.”

Business improvement district NE1 Ltd said the first phase of the £20m project with Network Rail and former rail operator East Coast had attracted additional investment from businesses in the area around the station. The project included pedestrianising and glazing the station portico and introducing new crossings and wider footways outside the station.

Discuss this at the Landor LINKS' Rail Stations & Property Summit 2017 in London on 21 February.
