Major road network for northern England "introduced" by Transport for the North

The concept of a 'Major Road Network for the North' to connect the economic centres is introduced by the first strategic transport plan for northern England.

Transport for the North's 13 connectivity priorities for the roads network focus predominantly on connections within the region than to other parts of the U.K. They include 'Energy Coasts' access improvements between the North West and North East coastlines; Port of Hull to A1 and westwards; the Central Trans-Pennine Corridor connectivity; the Leeds Cit y Region North-west Quadrant; and the Manchester Airport HS2 to North Wales Arc.

The proposed improvements for each route are not specific, given the need to "consider the possible impacts of social, technological, economic, political and environmental change," and the "funding environment". The routes are contained in an evidence document that will inform the plan, which TfN estimates could add £100bn to the economy, and also include nine rail investment priorities and a Pan-Northern smarter travel programme.
