Hitrans, the Highland and Islands transport partnership, has appointed consultant SYSTRA to explore the case for a sleeper train between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Wick or Thurso (LTT 28 Oct 16). The train would make use of the Mark 3 sleeper stock currently used on anglo-Scottish services, which will become surplus to requirements next year when the new Mark 5 stock is delivered by Spanish manufacturer CAF.
