The rail industry has proposed the almost complete elimination of diesel passenger trains by 2050, ten years later than proposed by then rail minister Jo Johnson last year. But it says there is no obvious alternative to diesel for freight.  

A rail industry decarbonisation taskforce and the RSSB have collaborated on a report that responds to Johnson’s challenge that the rail industry should eliminate diesel-only trains by 2040.
