The Government is considering taking over the troubled Northern rail franchise from Arriva, Grant Shapps confirmed. 

Although Arriva has a contract to run the franchise until the end of March 2025, the Government is under pressure to terminate it early. 

Thousands of Northern’s services were cancelled or short-formed last year, and problems continue. The delayed delivery of new trains means the hated Pacer trains will continue in service next year. Sunday services on some lines...
