While on holiday in Caithness earlier this month, I called in at the railway outpost of Georgemas Junction, where the lines to Wick and Thurso split, to view a Scottish Government-funded timber train trial (writes Andrew Forster). 

Timber trains were a longstanding feature of Scotland’s rural railways but the traffic came to an abrupt halt in the early 2000s. Nowadays the only felled timber moved by rail in the UK is from southern Scotland, with loading at Carlisle for onward...
