Welsh transport minister Ken Skates has urged the DfT to support plans to enhance rail capacity on the south Wales main line between Cardiff and the Severn Tunnel.
Skates has welcomed the emerging conclusions of the South East Wales transport commission chaired by Lord Burns.
It recommends a major upgrade of the south Wales relief rail lines.
