The government has cut the rail enhancements budget by £1bn – down nearly 10% from the £10.4bn previously calculated by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). Chancellor Rishi Sunak did not mention the cut in his Spending Review last month (LTT 27 Nov).
But following the Spending Review, Labour’s shadow transport secretary, Jim McMahon, used a written parliamentary question to ask ministers for their revised estimate of the total rail enhancements budget.
