Local authorities in Tyne and Wear say they will not be financially impacted by reduced traffic volumes through the tolled Tyne Tunnels caused by Covid-19.

Traffic through the tunnels (one northbound and one southbound) normally amounts to about 55,000 vehicles a day but fell to about 17,000 (30 per cent of normal levels) during the lockdown last spring. Volumes then recovered to 85 per cent by mid-September before falling again as restrictions were tightened once more. In December they were 78...
