Plans to re-open the disused Leamside Line, originally part of the Durham Junction Railway, and to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro, feature in the first North East Rail and Metro Strategy, due to be approved on 14 June as LTT went to press.
The strategy - which covers Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland – recognises the central role of rail and Metro in lowering carbon emissions by 2035.
