Re-investing money saved from scrapping the northern leg of HS2 is at the heart of Conservative transport policy set out in its manifesto. If re-elected, the Tories have pledged to extend their £2 single fare bus fare cap for the entirety of the next parliament. The extension of the cap, which applies to bus services in England outside London, will be funded by savings from reform of the railway which will save up to £1.5bn annually, the party’s manifesto states. The cap was introduced in January 2023 as a three-month trial, but has been extended twice, and is due to run until the end of this year.
