New York starts USA’s first congestion charge

The USA’s first congestion charge has started operation in central New York after delays caused by opposition to the scheme by motorists and businesses.

The city’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said that 10% fewer cars and trucks will enter the zone as a result of the charge, and estimates it will help to raise $15bn (£12bn) for public transport projects.
