Time's up for Westminster meters

The last conventional single-bay parking meters in Westminster are to be removed on 11 May. Westminster City Council was the first local authority in the UK to introduce this cash payment method and it is now the first to remove it.

When first introduced in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, in July 1958, the council considered the new meters to be the most elegant and economical method of paying for parking time. By the time of its demise the “lollipop” meter had become an expensive bane...
