Britain’s tramway systems lag behind those in mainland Europe but at least some are growing. Six new trams at London Tramlink have enabled service frequencies to increase by 50% over the busiest section of routes centred on Croydon, south London. Tramlink currently carries 29 million passengers per year, up 45% from the figures in 2000, when it opened, without any increase in network length.
