For some time now, proponents of HS2 have given up on business and environmental cases, taking refuge in that quirky, murky, jargon-laden world of railways by claiming “it’s capacity dear boy” on the so-called Milton Keynes-Northampton corridor.

But now we learn that Virgin trains leaving Euston during the peak are only 52% full (‘Peak-time Euston trains half empty’ LTT 21 Dec 12), a fact born out by my experiences. That’s not the point, say the railfans...
