London’s burgeoning population puts bikes and buses before cars

Transport for London’s annual compendium of transport statistics highlights the pressures that population growth is placing on the capital’s transport networks.

London’s population has grown by almost one million people over the last decade, placing huge additional demands on the capital’s transport networks, according to Transport for London.

The capital’s population reached a low point of just over 6.7 million in the late 1980s. But the 2011 Census reports a population of 8.2 million, 12% higher than the 2001 Census estimate, and approaching the previous peak of 8.6 million recorded in the late 1930s.
