80mph limit plan hurtles to scrapheap

22 February 2013

The Government looks likely to scrap plans to raise the speed limit on some parts of England’s motorway network from 70 to 80mph. The idea was first championed by then transport secretary Philip Hammond but lost momentum when he was moved to become defence secretary. The Daily Telegraph reported a coalition source saying this week: “There is no imminent announcement of a U-turn but rest assured, there is no way Patrick [McLoughlin] is going to preside over a raising of the limit on motorways. You are likely to hear official confirmation later in the year.”
