Merseytravel condemned by local paper over smartcard “fiasco"

The Liverpool Post went after its local ITA with all guns blazing in mid-May, laying the blame for a whole series of high-profile setbacks firmly at the feet of onetime CEO Neil Scales and ex-chairman Mark Dowd.

ON 16 MAY, The Liverpool Post castigated Merseytravel, the Integrated Transport Authority for Merseyside, over its now aborted attempt to invest in a non-transport smartcard for the region. “When is a smart card not so smart?” the paper asked rhetorically on its front page. “When it costs the taxpayer £6.5m.”
