In his article celebrating the 50th anniversary of Traffic in Towns, John Dales derides those of us who continue to believe that ‘predict and provide’ was not necessarily a bad policy (“The future of urban transport: ‘decide and provide’” LTT 31 May). He instead advocates a ‘decide and provide’ policy.

What is wrong with trying to predict needs in the future and then working to provide them? The predictions always did (or should have) allowed for...
