The Chancellor of the Exchequer this week insisted the Government would press ahead with its high-speed rail project, despite growing criticism of the plans from opposition politicians and business leaders.

George Osborne told the BBC: “I’m passionate about this project. HS2 is about changing the economic geography of this country, making sure the North and the Midlands benefit as well.”
