Work has begun to remodel a major south London roundabout to make it safer for cyclists.
The works on the Queens Circus roundabout outside Battersea Park in the London Borough of Wandsworth will separate cyclists from other traffic and provide new pedestrian crossings. It is the first roundabout scheme in London to segregate cyclists in this way.
Jonathan Cook, Wandsworth’s transport spokesman, said: “We’re able to provide extra space for the cycle lanes by reducing the size of the roundabout’s central island. The space for other traffic is maintained and overall traffic can be better managed.”
The project is part of a plan to overhaul large sections of the street network in Nine Elms (north Battersea) to prepare the former industrial area for a major increase in population and economic activity.
The roundabout design has been developed by the council, Transport for London and the Battersea Power Station Development Company. The power station developer is managing the project, which should be completed next summer.
This will be discussed at LTT's London Cycling Show on the 12th September
