Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council is having to revise its free parking policy for owners of low emission vehicles because of the abolition of paper tax discs, which came into effect on 1 October. 

Owners of vehicles that fall into band A for Vehicle Excise Duty (emissions below 100g of CO2 per km) have been exempted from parking charges by Stockport Council since 2007. In 2013 there were 612,000 such vehicles registered in Great Britain.
