Fuel tax rise postponed as Darling revamps car tax to reflect CO2

Fear of a backlash from motorists and road hauliers has prompted Chancellor Alistair Darling to announce that the 2p per litre rise to fuel duty planned for April will be delayed until October.

Welcoming Darling's Budget day announcement, the AA and Freight Transport Association said that if fuel prices remained at record levels in the autumn the increase should be scrapped altogether. The AA said average UK petrol prices now stood at 106.32p per litre compared with 89.02 pence per litre a year...
