The Government is to fund the development of a business case for Crossrail 2, the proposed new rail line across central London, connecting lines in the south-west with north-east. 

The Chancellor’s pledge comes as a study for TfL by consultant PwC put a £27.5bn cost on the project (2014/15 prices) and suggested the Government may have to fund at least half of it.
