The new DfT report on road travel demand is very welcome as it provides a useful overview and adds to the debate (‘DfT joins the debate about the drivers of road traffic demand’ LTT 23 Jan).
While at the moment the conclusions seem to me a bit along the lines ‘It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future’, I wonder if this uncertainty alone should be sufficient to downrate the supposed benefits of road capacity schemes? The case seems strong...
