With the success of digital marketplaces such as Airbnb, as well as businesses that don’t own any of the inventory they sell such as booking.com, Silicon Valley trawled the world for the next industry it could monetise and found it in parking. So it was that, between 2013 and 2015, a staggering US$243m (£170m) was invested in digital-first parking marketplaces, with over half of that sum invested in the last six months.
