History on my (and your?) doorstep: the chance of new life for old cycle tracks

I wrote last time (LTT721) about a project I’m involved with that aims to breathe new life into around 300 miles of Ministry of Transport-funded segregated cycleways that were built in the late 1930s. Some of these became buried and lost, while others are hidden in plain sight. Some remain designated as cycle tracks, but other have long since been ‘repurposed’ as general carriageway. An update on the project was then on the front page of LTT723.

John Dales is a streets design adviser to local authorities around the UK, a member of several design review panels, and one of the London mayor’s design advocates. He is a past chair of the Transport Planning Society, a former trustee of Living Streets, and a committee member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety. He is director of transport planning and street design consultancy Urban Movement.
