Two-thirds of European city dwellers would consider swapping second car for ride-hailing app, claims poll

Two-thirds of Europeans owning two or more cars would consider getting rid of one if they could get around easily using ride-hailing apps and public transport, a survey conducted for Uber suggests.

A poll of 10,000 people in 10 European cities by ORB International indicates that car ownership in European capitals remains relatively high at 63% - although varies between 51% for Stockholm and 86% for Rome - and with 42% with two or more cars. But the majority of those polled, including the car-owners, say they are concerned about pollution and they would prefer to see fewer cars on the road. Over two-thirds would consider using ridehailing apps as an alternative to owning a car, a figure that rises to 80% for people who have used app-based services to book a car (just over a quarter of the total).

Of the households that own two or more cars, 63% would consider owning only one if they could more easily get around with a combination of car apps and public transport. The independent poll was highlighted by Uber at a time it has been facing legal action in a number of European cities, and its licence in London is under review.
