The DFT has awarded £1.75m to five pilot projects for decarbonising the rail sector.
Each project will receive £350,000. One will explore the use of solar panels to power trains.
The awards came as the rail industry decarbonisation taskforce submitted a report to Government, setting out how diesel-only passenger trains could be eliminated by 2040 through actions such as bi-modes, hydrogen, and battery trains.
