Coastal shipping services carrying containers are to become eligible for Government grant support, a change that could reduce the funding available for rail freight.
The Government currently awards Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) grant for moving containers by rail on certain flows within the UK, to make the mode competitive with road. There is no equivalent scheme for coastal shipping.
