Labour pledges to slash rail fares

The Labour Party this week pledged to cut regulated rail fares in most of England by a third if it wins the General Election next week. It has also promised free rail travel for those aged 16 or under. 

The fares reduction would take effect in January and apply to non-devolved regulated fares in England such as peak time and season tickets. Regulated rail fares are due to rise by an average of 2.7 per cent next month.
